Parallel Sections: Attack of the Clones & The Empire Strikes Back; ST EP VIII

Since Ring Composition is the narrative structure that holds together the Star Wars Saga. I am creating this thread so that we can either predict the plot or disprove spoilers based on the previous parallel sections of the Saga. Below is the basic outline of AOTC & ESB. Already we have some hints that there are potential plot points matching up. Yet there are many so called "spoilers" & "leaks" that make it discouraging to some about the direction for Reylo both as a romantic couple and individuals. However,  I am hoping that this analysis will help some alleviate some fears about the direction of ST EP8. From the precedent that TFA has set with holding to ring composition for it's narrative structure, it would only seem logical that  EP8 will continue to parallel, mirror & reverse it's middle section predecessors, but how closely will it hold the pattern? Only time will tell.

For a full analysis of ATOC & ESB follow the link  http://www.starwarsringtheory.com/ring-composition-chiasmus-hidden-artistry-star-wars-prequels/4/

"Meanwhile in Clones, a romance begins to blossom between Anakin and Padme, much like it does between Han and Leia in Empire. The “first kiss” scene in both episodes occurs at roughly the same time, and, in a subtle touch, both kisses are cut short. Also note how the actors’ positions are reversed between shots."

@Maria Antonietta

Star Wars is about life, bust mostly about hope & love... The more I go over the OT & PT, the more I realize what a big fat romantic George Lucas is. Corny as all hell... LOL, and that is when I loose patience with much of the dystopian analysis, ST Saga is not  Mad Max or Blade Runner.

Just look at these set of frames from OT & PT... In a 5 minute period you will see,

Qui Gon, the Jedi who learned to maintain his force body or life beyond death. ( Saint Qui Gon Jinn)
Palps, telling the story of life produced by the dark side of the force.
Obi Wan, observing artificially produced life ( Jango Clones) on Kamino
Anakin and Padme's romantic interlude on Naboo, which will produce the life of Luke & Leia
Han & Leia romantic interlude on MF inside an asteroid, which will produce the life of Ben Solo.
Obi & Luke in Mos Eisely Cantina, showing the plethora and variety of life in the universe
Luke expressing to Obi's Force Ghost that there is still light & life in Anakin and that he can't kill him...( Faith)

The rumor about Luke wanting Rey to Kill Kylo is out of sequence with Ring Composition, and Obi Wan never directly asks Luke to Kill Vader,
What does occur in ESB is that Obi Wan tells Luke if he faces Vader he will not interfere....

Skywalker rushed to aid them. Kenobi warned him that he was at a crossroads and that his abilities were what the Emperor wanted; Kenobi didn't want to lose Skywalker to the Emperor the way he had lost Vader. He also told the Jedi apprentice that, if he was to face Darth Vader, he would do it alone as he couldn't interfere. Finally, Kenobi gave Skywalker some final advice in that he shouldn't give into hate for it led to the dark side. As Skywalker departed from Dagobah, Kenobi was worried that the Jedi may have lost their last hope, only for Yoda to remind him of Luke's sister, Leia Organa.[10]
About a year later, he reappeared after the death of Yoda to explain why he did not tell Luke the truth about his father. Though Luke wanted to believe that there was still good in his father, echoing Padmé's belief from twenty-three years ago, Kenobi no longer held that belief. He tells Luke that he must face his destiny by confronting Vader once again. Luke asks what did Yoda mean by there's another Skywalker. Kenobi confesses that Leia was Luke's sister, though he warns Luke about the powers of the Emperor.[110]

"The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films," she said. "The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story."

Ring Composition Episode VIII Star-wars-force-awakens

MHO, is that the main trio of Rey, Finn & Kylo are all legacy characters they are not new or random, they are generational. They are the new generation. The qoute from KK is telling if you match up the last shot from ROTJ with the Poster from TFA and "think" in a linear narrative, then ring it....It is poetry

“The whole movie is  a series of character introductions,” says Arndt, who help craft the story before Kasdan and Abrams penned the script. “You want all your character introductions to be A-plus. You want to give each person their moment."

How do the writers introduce you to the characters? through visual storytelling, call backs and ring comp... The first acts by the three main characters, Rey, Kylo & Finn all tell you "who they are...

Part 1 of 2 Finn

I will be doing a post for all three but this first one is going to focus on Finn...I think he is a Calarissian... Why? His first act is to betray the FO... and that was the main or signaling act from Lando, and the thing the character is most remembered for. But, for Lando, in ESB it was the "right thing to do", he had the responsibility as the Governor of Bespin to take care of it's people and protect them from punishment of the Empire.

Ring Composition Episode VIII Tumblr_o9mylyggsI1v3o2r3o1_400
Ring Composition Episode VIII Tumblr_o9f127m7tN1v3o2r3o4_500

Then Finn rescues Poe, and this is a call back to Luke rescuing Leia, but it is a fake/red herring call back, and Poe is not Leia either,  but I will get to that explanation in another post.

Ring Composition Episode VIII 9k=

Finn is chivalrous, why else is he helping a girl who he doesn't know and just kicked his a**.... Also, he is a flirt, just like Lando, when he asks Rey, "Do you have a boyfriend?"

There are so many echoes in TLJ that fall in line with ring composition. I'll just name what comes to mind:

1. For two trilogies our major protagonist has been a "somebody", a chosen one or a descendant of a chosen one. The ST completes the circle with a reveal of Rey Nobody, rhyming with the Skywalker family's origins as humble desert slaves.

2. Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side out of tainted romantic love for Padme and was saved by selfless familial love for Luke, Kylo fell to the dark side as a result of tainted familial love and can only be saved by selfless romantic love for Rey. The rain scene, the hut scene, the visions, the dialogue in the throne room, etc. Attack of the Clones ends with Anakin and Padme's union through marriage, while TLJ ends with Rey and Kylo's separation. The visual and thematic imagery supporting inverse Anidala are now through the roof.

3. A vision of Padme dying in the future led Anakin to unintentionally ensure that the vision came true. Contrarily, Rey's vision leads to her attempting to force it to become a reality by prematurely confronting Ben and Snoke.

4. The Jedi fell as a result of hubris and over-confidence, the last Sith fell as a result of underestimating the power of love. Rey fails in TLJ because of her hubris and over-confidence, Snoke dies as a result of underestimating the power of love. However, where love ignited a spark of humanity in Anakin in Return of the Jedi, Kylo wants to work alongside Rey to bring a new totalitarian order to the galaxy.

5. For the first time on-screen a dark sider manages to take out his mentor and survive, assuming his place as leader of the dark side order. This mirrors Sideous murdering Plagieus in his sleep and Anakin Skywalker murdering Jedi Mace Windu to prove himself to Sideous. Kylo, however, does not kill Snoke out of a desire to replace him, but rather to foster his connection with Rey.

6. Kylo has become the kind of dictator Anakin claimed would be effective in Attack of the Clones, rhyming with Sideous' rise to power. However, in gaining what he believed he wanted he has lost everything.

7. Darth Plagieus was murdered in his sleep by Sideous. Jedi Master Luke briefly considered murdering Ben in his sleep.

8. The circumstances of Luke's sacrifice recall Obi-Wan's sacrifice in ANH. Similarly he gives up his life in order to support the next generation, but rather than Obi-Wan haunting a younger Luke, Luke vows to haunt Ben.

9. The set-up for the finale of the saga revolves around the last Jedi who rose from nothing and the totalitarian dictator who rose from everything. They are future and past, new blood and legacy, light and dark, religion and politics.

This ties in with Reverse Anidala which is one of the most visible Ring Composition things going on in ST:

Yep - as much as it plays with audience expectations about the confrontation between Light and Dark in the OT, it's as much playing with the scenario in the PT. Which was partially about making the decision to betray his Master and the political/spiritual order he's sworn an oath to as a knight in order to protect the woman he's fallen in love with. Which puts them into "what would've happened if she'd survived?" territory given their differences in ideologies/belief systems.

I just saw this video on YouTube. Very cool parallels between the throne room scenes in Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi. I love poetry within Star Wars.

Another that I really like and can think of is when Luke tells Kylo the war is just beginning, and then in Attack of the Clones we have Dooku tell Darth Sidious the war has begun.

There's another parallel between Anidala, Han/Leia and Reylo. In the second film of each trilogy there is always a scene where the guy makes the girl feel flustered and she tells him to stop or change his behaviour, which he ignores:

Ring Composition Episode VIII Parall10

1. In AotC Anakin tries to flirt with Padme when he tells her that he's grown up. It makes her uncomfortable, so she asks him to stop. Instead of complying with her request, he's challenging her ("Why not?"). She then tells him that it makes her uncomfortable and turns away.
2. In ESB the Falcon jolts and Leia is pushed into Han's arms. She asks him to let go, but he ignores her wishes and holds on to her, telling her not to get excited. She is trying to act unfazed with her retort and he leaves her alone, but Leia is still flustered when he's gone.
3. In TLJ Rey asks Ben why he hated his father. When she realizes he is shirtless, she becomes flustered and looks away. She asks him if he could put on a cowl, but he ignores her request and approaches her. She changes the subject back to Han.

(BTW, is anyone else seeing what I'm seeing in the Han/Leia "Don't get excited" screenshot? Very Happy )

I found a video with parallels between the three trilogies. It includes TLJ so I post it here.

I agree with most of the parallels except one or two. For example, I would have put Rose and Finn kissing for the 'Kiss section'.

(I'm so happy to post on this subject, ring composition is how I discovered this forum and it made me like SW even more. cheers )

Several times I forgot to focus on the scenes because I was listening to the music. Embarassed
I think it's going to be even better when we have the third movie of the trilogy.
