I think they put themselves in a catch 22 with the scar. Had the current position of the scar been actually where Rey sliced him, he would have lost his eye. At the same time, if they had kept it where it was at in TFA, to use Rian's exact words, he's right it would have looked goofy. Interesting that they want to keep the dark and dangerous dreamboat motiff with Kylo for TLJ so much that they're willing to sacrifice continuity to do so.

Which is possibly the most intriguing thing about TLJ....why do they want him to be attractive?

Totally. If he were to remain "evil" for the entire trilogy they would have made him lost his eye. I think he would look more menacing that way.
