The Rise of Skywalker Trailers and Teasers

It's getting to be that time of year again, feels like two years ago was yesterday when we were sitting around wondering what/when it would happen and we got this from Rian (sadly now deleted when he purged out parts of his Tweet archive) (if you're feeling nostalgic the discussion is here and here)



The most important thread which picks up from TLJ's themes about the Force not being the provenance of an elite group & "the burden of all Masters" is that Luke's voiceover isn't him just speaking in character within the story but the filmmakers speaking to the audience and the generations who've followed it over 42 years. The lessons imparted about family, friendship, love (yes, including romantic love), courage and strength that the older generations at their best strive to pass on to the younger ones to ensure that they survive and live well. Which not coincidentally is a theme that's been noodling around in the ST with Ben's fall, Luke's shame/guilt, and Han's sacrifice





Seeing as how the agent for one of the three main characters has said the final full trailer is coming on Monday evening for North American time zones, the next few days should be interesting in waiting/speculating and then picking it apart. I'm hyped though gotta say as somebody who saw the original movie in one of the first week limited run theaters in one of my first movie outings with my teenaged siblings, the D23 trailer and its music really punches me in the feels.

Bumping up because it's dropping sometime between 1:30-2.30a GMT Tuesday morning. The 21st would've been Carrie's 63rd birthday for those of us in the Western Hemisphere who'll get it when it's still Monday evening.

No idea what it'll show, I was pretty happy and definitely moved by how the D23 trailer showing the entire arc of the Saga. But I'd love it if we got Rose and maybe finally letting Richard E. Grant out of the Mystery Box.

My TRoS trailer predictions

Leia (after all, Carrie Fisher's birthday, RIP Space Mom)

Ben Solo Darcy (infamous SWCC footage-not yet officially released)

Legacy saber in Ben's hands, saber locked with Dark Rey and her red saber (a great way to market Bendemption & Reylo in a trailer confusing way. It won't be confusing for us Reylos, or those in the GA that sense it - but for everyone else, it will be delicious WTF? haha )

And, I hope to see Rose (including an obvious FinnRose romantic scene)

Personally after 4 years and only a brief on-screen appearance despite the amount of ink spilled over them in the Art of TFA book, I'd love it if the Knights of Ren only show up at the very end. Like maybe for the credits and saying something like "Hey guys, sorry we're late. We were doing a podcast with Mike Zeroh and got delayed." That said, I think it's pretty likely they're in the trailer wrecking sh*t because of how much JJ and Kasdan fanboyed over the during TFA's press tour. Probably them and whatever the Sith Troopers are going to be doing.

Otherwise I'm trying to remember in the past when the trailers even premiered. I want to say that the OT trailers at best were shown on Saturday Night Live because the audience for that show overlapped with Rolling Stone, who did the cover stories. If I knew anything about the movies before going into them, it was more likely seeing clips on television, like when Siskel and Ebert devoted an entire episode to the OT right before RotJ came out and had exclusive clips that would be considered spoilers in today's media landscape.

I have the feeling we Will see kylo in the Falcon (dressed as kylo, to keep It confusing), leia and Rey and maybe a tease for some secret in Rey past /palpatine Voice her scenes

Saw crossed over from Rebels/TCW, but the significance of the character seemed to be lost on a lot of people. Maul reappeared beginning in TCW/Rebels as well, but people were entirely confused when he showed up in Solo because they thought he was dead. I think LF has learned some valuable lessons about how much they can and can't include the EU in the films. It's caused confusion every time.

But the Ghost, and some are saying that's the Colossus next to it, are fun easter eggs that make fans in the know happy without making the story reliant on it for those who don't know.

@MrsWindu TBH I'm more worried about getting my ticket than whatever drops in the trailer. Though that one detail is interesting because it's the same environment/blocking shot as Han and Leia's arrival into Cloud City

I’ve watched that clip and tried to pause it a dozen times. I can only see TIEs - is there a suggestion of the MF too (am on phone) ? Only 4 hours to go

here's a screenshot from my Macbook Air - it looks like the typical TIEs they've shown for the FO so far, can't make out the ships they're following. But it's more like a convoy/escort, not a pursuit

Also look at the blue infused light, that's significant the way reds were in TLJ. I just re-watched Michael Mann's Manhunter over the weekend for the first time since seeing it growing and it uses that same blue light for the scenes when Will Graham is either deep in investigation or during the "world apart" scenes with his wife.

For the fun of it, I'm trying to decipher the hints given by the Kira user from twitter. She looks like a member of LF with an anonymous
account and she is pro-reylo, so it will be relaxing to know that reylo is really the right answer for this trilogy!

Are there quotes from the filmmakers saying they shouldnt have brought maul back? Are they stating that lessons have been learned and that it was a  bad idea?

It seems the complete opposite, considering what JJ has been saying recently as well. I mean.. what lesson learned? Palpatine was supposed to be dead. Now he's back people seem to LOVE it and want to learn, how, why  when...its generating interest.

I can't seem to see the fandom complaining or LF?

Or just from my own friends who are casuals, they all thought it was awesome Maul was back and made them generate interest in the clone wars and rebels.

Someone is going to have to give me context for the Labyrinth (I think) scene. I don't even know what kind of character Jennifer Connelly plays. (oh, and... apple, strawberry... moon? lol)

ETA: Slightly off-topic, but I just read a quick synopsis of the plot, and BOY is that an interesting concept. Though I just asked my husband about it who watched it last year and he said it was weird, lol.

Maul's appearance in Solo generated more positive buzz than confusion. I think the lesson that LF learned from Solo has more to do with TLJ's second week 70% drop of the box office... you need momentum from one film to the other.... that is what LF learned.
