Re: Vanity Fair Feature and Lebowitz Photos for The Rise of Skywalker
The first time I saw the pics separately I totally thought they were looking at each other and they probably are! Ahh! So excited about this movie!
What a great Reylo day it has been! And we still have so many things to look forward to!

Re: Vanity Fair Feature and Lebowitz Photos for The Rise of Skywalker
I'm glad to see I was being overly cynical about what to expect, but after the TLJ issue it wasn't unwarranted. However one thing did catch my eye as to a potential reason why (besides Lucasfilm having an event meant to get people talking/excited about a movie except it was dull/safe and they had to do damage control),
The Truth About Rey & Kylo Ren's Connection
Quote written by their in-house fandom expert who first proclaimed that despite Carrie Fisher's "space kiss" comment, that Rey wouldn't be getting one from Kylo Ren and then had Rian say to her face at SXSW that the hand touch was "the closest to a sex scene in Star Wars." If you want to distinguish your publication as having knowledgeable staff with inside connections to the filmmakers, publically stating that you don't think the central relationship of their trilogy isn't a thing isn't a terribly smart move. It's also not smart when hey, the filmmakers themselves are talking about it with fans.
The Truth About Rey & Kylo Ren's Connection
Unlike some potential romances that have preoccupied fans, the Kylo and Rey relationship has gotten plenty of support from inside the Star Wars production team.

Re: Vanity Fair Feature and Lebowitz Photos for The Rise of Skywalker
A couple of things:
—Does anyone else think they’re fighting on top of that Death Star remnant in the ocean? I can’t help but wonder.
—My kindergartener, who has just seen “A New Hope” recently, has never seen any other Star Wars material, and who has no idea who these characters are, meandered up to me, pointed at the photo and told me who the good guy and bad guy were. (Bad guy = Kylo, good guy = Rey). When I asked him how he knew, he figured it out from the red lightsaber and the blue one. But then he said, “But she looks bad, not him.” His reasoning was from their faces: she looks angry and he doesn’t.
So, clearly I have an observant little guy, but it also reminded me of how Rey, without becoming the “bad guy” or going over to the Dark side, really does have quite a few moments of anger. It makes her an interesting character. Kylo’s relative calmness and lack of anger when faced directly with Rey has always been a recurring theme, and I think we see it here again.

Nice bit of escapism in what otherwise has been a bad year for me.
I can't help but notice in the Rey/Kylo 'duel' pics, she doesn't seem to be looking straight at Kylo....but something next to him.

My first take of that duel pic was that it was another Throne Room situation, and they just photoshopped whoever they’re both fighting out. Maybe I’m overanalysing it though

Re: Vanity Fair Feature and Lebowitz Photos for The Rise of Skywalker
According to some people they are not fighting each other here, it's a tricky one. They are in the middle of something which has nothing to do to each other and they probably got teleported to somewhere else thanks to the force bond. Based on their odd position they both got caught by surprise.
I think they're right!

I think the photo shouldn't be taken literally but simply confirms they're going to fight somehow in the film. It goes along with the leaks that say they'll be at odds in the beginning but also fight Palpy together in the end.

I’m pretty sure that some of these shots are staged for the magazine (though still in locations relevant to the movie), so I’m sceptical of analysing them as if they were actual screenshots from the film.

Agreed. Some photos are obvious, like the ones inside the Falcon or the Destroyer, but to be honest I’ve been wondering about others, like the Reylo duel in the rain or Finn and Jannah riding orbaks - I thought they might’ve been taken when the actors were about to shoot their scenes and edited by Leibovitz (as in they’re not the actual stills from the movie), but I stumbled upon the tweet below that made me re-consider it.

Remember this?
Not trying to be a party pooper but after cluster that was GOT Season 8, I;ll believe it when I see it. also, the whole thing is annoyingly "they are the closest thing to starcrossed lovers...but could be brother and sister." make up your mind. Glad I decided I'm not gonna see this unless spoilers satisfy. never paid for HBO subscription and that was the best decision I made given how they ruined GOT.

@vaderito
why do people constantly compare GoT with Star Wars??? GoT is grim dark meant for adults - and I can't understand how people believed Dani & Jon would've a happily ever after. Really? Did you not pay attention the last 7 seasons?
Star Wars is a fairy tale! It's meant for families and particularly children- we don't know how or even IF Ben & Rey will end-up together, but it will have a happy ending overall.
SO, back to topic!
I think the photos look beautiful- they're clearly staged and no movie shots, but it gives an impression what's about to come.

@Teo oswald
Yeah I commented about this first Rey moment in the spoilers thread. I agree.
yeah maybe Rey and Kylo meet in the desert twilight..
A few more random thoughts:
-I also found it interesting that the KOR are at the desert location.. this seems to me to be early in the film..
-Interesting that we have Rey + Chewie + BB-8 in a chase similar to the chase we saw Poe+Finn+C3P0 on in the teaser, so seems like the gang gets split up for the chase.. and still no signs of D-O.
-Poe's necklace is visible in the VF video - you know the one where he carries his ring for his special someone..
-Allegiant General Pryde - what a great name!
Is it just me or is carrying there either a rod or a cane? I can see someone is going to get bashed with it! ouchie.
-Final random comment..
Wonderful to see a glimpse of how Leia will be appearing in TROS here. I wish I could make out what the name of that music is lol. but looks like this could be after the hug in the teaser and it's a sad goodbye.. maybe..

this isn't about comparing SW to GOT but about that nothing is over until is over and marketing or magazine editorials that favor certain outcome may not reflect the endgame. it's long 7 months til Dec 20.

@DeeBee
I would scream with joy if Poe offered it to Rey and she refused him beause of Ben
ahahah I also thought at the beginning but then I said to myself: it can be a whip
General Pryde, the whip hand who knows...who knows
I believe we will hear music worthy of John Williams, a melancholic music as Rey sheds a tear. I'm a little bit sad , but I hope Leia can see her son's face for the last time.
I assume they are on the same planet, in the trailer we can see Poe and Finn escape an attack. I believe that they can be KOR.hts: -I also found it interesting that the KOR are at the desert location.. this seems to me to be early in the film wrote:

The first time I misread Richard Grant's character name and thought it was "Pryce". My jaw dropped. I was already thinking about how he could be related to Ahrinda Pryce. An uncle? A cousin? But why would they include a relative of a cartoon/book character in the movie? Then I saw it is actually Pryde. Oh, well. Could have been fun because there is a resemblance in stern features

How are these things comparable in any way? There was no way Jon and Dany were going to end up together because the text (the show/books) was clearly not building up to that. Game of Thrones is dark, nihilistic misery-porn fantasy for adults; Star Wars is hopeful, optimistic fantasy for families to watch at Christmas. None of this is confirmation of anything and I don't think anyone is treating it as such, it's just more evidence to add to the ever-growing pile.

I get the impression he expects reylo to happen . It’s interesting too that when working on the article he initially thought there would be a lot of Poe and Finn and it sounds like what he got was kylo and Rey .
He also said Kelly Marie Tran wasn’t available for interview and he hoped kylo would live because we’ve never had a darksider live to tell the tale . Not sure if he is still doing the AMA but interesting take on what he thinks could happen.
Aha he thinks Kylo is like Heathcliff!
WOW I LOVE THIS GUY
I've been thinking about how much I'd be depressed if they gave us an ending like GOT did. But seeing as how SW is not GOT, I'm hopeful.
I'm fairly optimistic that we'll get a better ending.
The main reason is that Jon/Dany could not understand each other as deeply as Kylo/Rey can. Not only there is a physical attraction between these two but also on the spiritual level, they're in sync and it grows stronger when in close proximity. Jon/Dany IMO never understood one another that much other than the physical level when they needed one another at that specific moment and that is one of the reasons it all lead to that tragedy.
Besides this is SW saga and as Grossman said it no Dark Sider ever came back and live to tell the tale. I mean Revan kind of did for a time but then it all got messy.

The magazine covers are just a nice bonus, people are way more excited about the new quotes from the actors (not the editorializations) and the new quotes from JJ. We are learning things about the movie and seeing a few nice photographs from the set. The thing that made me the happiest out of all of it was JJ talking about how Rian influenced him and Driver clarifying once again that there was always an entire arc planned for his character and JJ is back to see it through. The other best bit was Daisy revealing a long-time speculation that Rey feels out of place or slightly apart within the Resistance because of her Force Sensitivity. The covers are cool and all but they aren't the main feature, although they do seem to be the thing upsetting antis the most, haha.

I guess I was too focused on starcrossed lovers may be siblings aka jonerys 2.0. I just wish they stop with hedging their bets like that.

Re: Vanity Fair Feature and Lebowitz Photos for The Rise of Skywalker
Jon and Daenerys were introduced to each other for the FIRST time 7/8ths through the show. In terms of pacing, that's significant to where they wanted the story to go and how you were supposed to feel about it. They built up their romance in a superficial, rushed manner only to deconstruct it again quickly. There was no "will they/won't they" aspect to their relationship, and in the end it was mainly was there to represent the dichotomy/theme "Love is the death of duty/Duty is the death of love." (In addition, Game of Thrones consistently "told" the audience from Day 1 through its plot and manner of storytelling not to expect straightforward happiness for anyone, seeing as once something "good" was set up, it was deconstructed/turned on its head in an often terrifically horrifying manner.)
By contrast, Rey and Kylo have been linked since the first film in the trilogy, have been built up slowly, with the "will they/won't they/star-crossed/who are they to each other?" aspect being dangled all the way through. In terms of pacing alone they are more likely to have a happy ending, not to mention other story beats. They might not, but it's not going to be like GoT. There might be crossover in mythology, motifs, and themes, but they're ultimately not the same beast. GoT was consistently telling the audience - "don't be too hopeful" while SW is continually emphasized to be a story about hope.
That is to say, I agree with those who have said not to overthink the comparison too much (she said, after writing two paragraphs that overthink the comparison, lol)

Lev Grossman, VF author, on Reylo
please don't compare the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren with Jon and Dany
please, there's no way it can end like this.
I'm still suffering
https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/brqj1f/hello_im_lev_grossman_here_to_talk_about_my_new/
Anyway, I’m reminded of the recent Matt Martin answer on twitter on the Jedi code about attachments being no more. So the last point Lev states here isn’t a issue anymore .

I think jonerys and reylo have some similarities but they are “reversed” in a way. They start as friends while reylo starts as enemies, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had the same ending, actually it would make more sense with reylo than it did with jonerys. I know some people like happy endings but I don’t think a tragic romance is less valid or canon. If anything it makes it more epic (like Romeo and Juliet).
