Podcast 15 - Luke Skywalker in the Sequel Trilogy | Spoilers and Character Analysis

This is a two-part in depth discussion of one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars: Luke Skywalker. In this episode we cover Luke's character arc in canon and EU materials, and what that can tell us about future directions for Luke in the Sequel Trilogy. We'll also analyze key character dynamics with special focus on the  connection between Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren.

It's getting super interesting comments on the YouTube page. I'm surprised that so many people are open/thinking about dark!Luke.

My favorite one so far is someone pointing out that Luke and Kylo's greatest fears pertain to Darth Vader (Luke = I might become Vader, Kylo Ren = I will never be as strong as Vader) and whether these fears will become realized. Food for thought.

The Last Jedi Teaser Trailer: meaning and significance for the Sequel Trilogy

In this episode, we discuss the first teaser trailer for The Last Jedi. We look at what it means for the plot developments, including Kylo's arc, Rey's role as the hero and Luke as a conflicted character. We also discuss how the choices in the teaser point to an earlier development for Kylo, and how Rey this time is clearly portrayed as a protagonist. We also comment on Rey Kenobi, Jedi lore, the first jedi temple and the surprises that the production is hiding about the resistance plot.

The Last Jedi: First poster and Celebration

In this episode, we discuss the symbolism and significance of The Last Jedi poster. We comment on Rey, Kylo and Luke, and how these characters are set up to surprise us. We also comment on the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren. Finally, we have some insider tips, stories and comments about Star Wars celebration.

All the feels with the He-man and She-ra clips, lol. When I was a kid I would use my grandma's umbrella to do the pose and "transform" like She-ra. (That same umbrella doubled as a lightsaber at times. XD)

This week's podcast is Rose in The Last Jedi.

In this episode, we discuss Kelly Marie Tran's character in The Last Jedi: Rose. We discuss her relationship with Finn, what type of character arc she's likely to have, and the likely FinnRose romance. We also compare these characters to other characters in the Trilogy, such as Kylo Ren and Rey, and we discuss casting of Asian actors and whitewashing in Hollywood.

REYLO 101: Canon vs Controversy

In this episode, we tackle the criticism and controversy surrounding the idea that Rey and Kylo Ren will have a romantic arc, commonly known on the internet as Reylo.

• We explain why Reylo is not abusive, Reylo is not racist, Reylo is not incestuous and how Reylo did not start as fanfiction or as dark fantasies projected by women.
  
  
• We also discuss how the signs that point to a romantic connection between Rey and Kylo were present in The Force Awakens. We discuss the idea of Rey Skywalker and fans' attitudes and hopes towards that, as well as Rey's role as a protagonist and heroine, and her depiction as a strong and capable character.
  
  
• We analyse film technique, storytelling and movie tropes, commentaries by the directors and producers, and the novelization and script for The Force Awakens.
  
  
• Finally, we discuss the potential impact of a romance between Rey and Kylo Ren in the Sequel Trilogy and The Last Jedi.

If anyone ever brings up people just liking Kylo because he's attractive and back it up with 'but he's evil!!' when you bring up Leia, just mention the male fandom's obsession with Darth Talon. Gee, I wonder why she's popular with them?

In this episode we overview the signs supporting the idea that Rey and Kylo Ren will have a romantic arc in the upcoming episodes.
We compare Rey and Kylo Ren to other canon couples in Star Wars films, and discuss the popular "Reverse Anidala" theory. We discuss fairy tale elements present in the dynamics between Rey and Kylo Ren. Lastly, we make predictions and share our own wish list for Reylo in the Sequel Trilogy, including the likelihood of a kiss in the upcoming installments.  XD

He does definitely defer to her. When she draws the lightsaber over him there's no "that lightsaber, it belongs to me!" She initiated the snow fight (he waited for her to make the first move). He waits when she needs to find the Force. He loses to her and aside from his fear that she may kill him, the awe remains. This really doesn't seem to be talked about too much (outside of this forum...) and I could imagine not even being able to convince people that he is deferring to her, let alone getting to the next part of the conversation. That Rey is the more dominant one in the dynamic (ultimately) is why I think Reylo can work. Hero/villain romance works when the hero is the more dominant because the hero's ethics then dominate as well. If the villain is the dominant party, the relationship is more of a roller coaster ride until it crashes and burns.

I agree 100% with all of this, and it's actually part of what draws me personally to this pairing. Kylo Ren is presented as powerful and dominant initially, and the expectation is that he is going to overpower Rey completely when they finally meet. I love how they overturned that assumption over the course of the film. I remember reading someone's review after TFA came out that it was "just a rehash" of ANH, but if you look at the Reylo dynamic it's completely fresh and new, it's interesting and out of left field. I love that they did that. XD

The Last Jedi: Vanity Fair Spotlight Discussion - "That's Not What He Said" Edition

• In this episode we discuss the recent controversy surrounding an excerpt from a Rian Johnson interview for Vanity Fair, in which he discusses the absence of a central romance in Episode 8.
  
  
• We take exception to the implication that Reylo is solely "fan-fiction fantasy", and discuss why VF's decision to name-check specific groups in the fandom - and Lucasfilm/Disney's decision to allow this - is problematic.

Kylo Ren and the Portrayal of Masculinity in Star Wars
In this episode we analyze the portrayal of masculinity in Star Wars, with special focus on Kylo Ren.

-We discuss the nuance and careful layering that went into Kylo Ren's characterization as a conflicted and powerful yet vulnerable young man. We discuss the impact of Kylo Ren's male figures on his development and choices. We speculate as to the reasons why he has chosen to identify with his idealized Darth Vader while rejecting the very real and perhaps flawed Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.

-We discuss the backlash against Kylo's character, and how it may have come about as a result of his clash with ideas of "acceptable" and traditional masculinity.

-We analyze Kylo's act of patricide and cross guard saber from a Freudian lens: sometimes a lightsaber is just a lightsaber - but not when it belongs to Kylo and he's twirling it about. ^.^
