I hated it too, and the answer is simple: they wanted to write plot twist after plot twist even if they don't make sense at all to the story. In this case, it's so... absurd, because they're kind of friends now? They have a bond, and they touch hands, and talk about each other eyes and whisper sensually near each other's mouths in elevators... But when it comes to ACTUALLY talking... There's nothing? O-kay.
@Piper Maru

Ugh! Does this mean sexual tension, RATHER than romance? Like... you get the sense that they wanna bang, but in the end Kylo might not bend at all for her? Because antis will say he’s just trying to seduce her rather than actually caring about her beyond her powers.

Glad you raised this @motherofpearl1! True, it was not a typical reaction!
@Piper Maru yep - these two are not good talkers. they are better doers!
I put it down to Rey being raised in isolation on Jakku - and maybe understandably struggling to communicate -so much horror and beauty in his offer. I can actually understand why she would not have known what to say.

I had a thought... there is the idea that Kylo thought she was going for the saber to kill him - if this is what he thought (and I dont know I'd like to see the scene again), then the fact that she awakes from unconsciousness first and doesn't harm him should eventually speak volumes.
She wasn't going to or wanting to kill him. She had her chance while he was out cold and she left him there unharmed.
I'm feeling comforted by this thought -that when the emotions calm Kylo will realise this too...

@Cowgirlsamurai

I didn’t see it as only sexual tension at all. Kylo isn’t exactly tactful about her origin but he’s truthful. When he said she wasn’t nothing to him and his anguished “please” didn’t say to me that he was only after her for sex. Similarly with Rey, I could see she found him attractive but it was more than that. The vision she had, manipulated or not, gave her hope for something more than a tumble in the sheets. IMO, the sexual attraction and tension was definitely there but it wasn’t the be all and end all by a long way.

Loved it, just got out of the theater so will write up something more comprehensible. But I was grinning the whole time, and the huge cheer on the theater when Kylo killed Snoke! Loved it loved it loved it!

I just got settled down from seeing the movie, the projector broke right at the Crait battle so it ran a little longer for us XD thank god they got it fixed!! Anyways, holy cow where do I begin??
Where I didn't care for Finn's arc at all in this, I loved Poe! And Mark was absolutely fantastic!! It was so good to see him back and the ending with him and Kylo...and him passing into the force was absolutely amazing. I'm happy with the way that he went out in this, but with his one line to Kylo I definitely am anticipating in him being a force ghost at least in Episode lX. And now for the good parts Wink which I'm sure you guys already know but I'm going to share them anyways...I was really bummed that there wasn't anything regarding the KoR in this so I'm beginning to believe that at this point they're non-existent?? I don't know...but the dynamic between Kylo and Rey was AMAZING!! Their hand touching scene...holy cow...how do I even begin to describe that?? Other than the fact that it was absolutely beautiful! There was so much emotion and tenderness in that scene alone, better than any kiss right now, Kylo willingly taking his glove off to feel skin-to-skin contact with her was just...I'm honestly speechless! That's all I have for that. The theater came unglued when Kylo killed Snoke. Their PG fight was absolutely epic! And you could tell how literally no one is gonna take Kylo seriously as long as Hux is there. That whole moment of defeat that Kylo had on his face when he held those gold dice...I seriously wanted to cry for him. That scene spoke so many words for him and how he badly realized that he screwed up. All in all, my husband even agrees with me on this being the best Star Wars movie yet. It was perfect!!

TLJ review

This is my movie. Loved it, the visuals, the soundtrack, the emotions. I sat waiting through what seemed like a million coming attractions (Battle Angel Alita? Ok. Rampage??? From the old arcade game? Why??) and watching it in the theater opening night with other fans to see their reactions is great. Most overheard comments: awesome movie.

So to the nitty gritty: Reylo.

A+, seriously, the only complaint I have is I wanted more of it. The force bond stuff is so well done and AD and DR play off each other so well. The combination of emotions and humor- Kylo running down the hall looking for where Rey was, lol- really humanized both of them. That hand touch scene, the close up as they just barely grazed fingers gazing into each other's eyes. Reylo is endgame, sorry I don't make the rules. I can't wait to see the visions they had of each other, and I really do think we will see them and it will be the same vision interpreted differently. With Luke letting down Rey and her vision of Kylo you can really tell how much she really believes in her course of action. And when Kylo killed Snoke the whole theater cheered, that fight was amazing, both of them looking out for each other and fighting in sync. When Kylo is proposing you can tell he is trying to make Rey see his reasoning, bringing up her insecurities about her past. She couldn't let go of it, it held her back and yet she truly knew all along- Kylo voiced her own thoughts that she just couldn't. His "join me, please" so desperate, he truly believes in his vision where Rey was standing by his side and wants it to come true.

But of course she rejects him, unable to follow the path he is on. Like Jane rejecting Rochester, she leaves him metaphorically howling into the moors. But that last shot, where the bond between them opens and Rey shuts the door on him, leaving him alone and slumped over as the dice face from his fingers...yeah, Kylo is getting everything he thought he wanted. But that won't be what he needs.

And that will be Rey.

Luke:

A+, most know I don't have any hero worship of Luke so honestly I wasn't expecting to by moved as much in his final scenes. First with Leia, a quiet scene where we get the line "no one is ever really gone" a clear window into the Luke that threw away his lightsaber in front of the Emperor. Then with Kylo, his greatest regret. He defeats Kylo utterly and completely and he isn't really even there. Then finally, when the sun is setting on the island and yet Luke sees the twin suns and then faded. A true ending to a hero, a legend. And yet I think he might be back, like Yoda to help both his students.

Finn and Rose:

A, let me just get it out of my system- FinnRose is the sweetest thing. KMT really is great and JB is energized, their plot is pretty thin but they make it work with charisma.

The resistance

B, A+ for Hondo jumping through the ship, it is kinda sad to say but I almost wish more named characters died. I felt like the resistance lost their red shirt army. Paige's death was dramatic, but we should have had more time with her. Otherwise, you could feel the tension as they were running from the FO with their hope dying little by little.

Leia

A, would be A+ except for the weirdly shot superman scene. I get the idea behind it, but that pose. But this is super nitpicky of me. Loved her scenes with Luke and Poe, but especially her last one with Hondo. It is rare for a goodbye to comrade scene between two middle aged women and I never knew I needed one until now.

FO

B, Phasma was underused, but I loved the other officers especially at the beginning battle. Hux is his usual smarmy self, and everyone loves to hate him. Kylo even got a cheer when he rams him into the wall with the Force. Hux is already planning his coup in his beady little eyes.

All in all, loved it. Can't wait for that FoD episode with Rey and Kylo because I am sure it will be more Force bond stuff. And that force bond stuff was cut from the movie- you felt the length. And that the Hope message spread throughout, and the continual talk of Kylo's conflict and saving him will play a big part of episode 9.

I LOVED IT!
I am terrible at reviews until like a week later, lol! But the Reylo UST was palpable. And whomever said that hand touching scene was borderline pornographic was SPOT ON.
In the elevator it was clear they wanted each other. Rey moves way in on Ben and they look at each others mouths and whisper lines. It was just AHHHH! He liked it when she called him Ben Mwehe
After Ben kills Snoke and Rey gets up and looks at him like "my hero" I knew they were both toast. It was written all over their faces. Heck I think Rey thought she and Ben were a thing after the throne room fight and the whole next scene played out like a breakup to me (lightsaber splitting in two sort of symbolized that to me as well as them being equals). I want you but can't be with you like this, oh, and I also have to think about the bigger picture and save my friends.
Also, I seriously thought that Ben was going to stride over and kiss her after Rey threw him the lightsaber and he kills the guard that has him in a choke hold. Then he kind of shrugs him off and gives her that look. And yes they were keeping an eye on each other during that fight. Reys face when she turns around and sees Ben in trouble was perfect.
I think also that when she looked at Finn and Rose she was happy for them but also wished she could have that too.
I'm getting out of order but I don't care. I loved it! Reylo is Canon. Reylo is Endgame. Reylo is Everything!.

The Last Jedi: Our Reviews and Reactions - Page 12 Empty Re: The Last Jedi: Our Reviews and Reactions

Annnnd I'm back here after a long break away from the speculation. I knew I needed you guys right after the screening. Gosh, I was panting through the entire film. Don't remember much of the scenes specifically apart from rely scenes.

I'm just probably going to repeat what everyone else has been saying but here are my first impressions:
- Visually captivating - location wise; abstract concepts and ideas being transformed into the film composition (kylo/rey in the throne room fighting over the saber)
- I know a lot of people dislike the Resistance/Finn plots, but I think what they are trying to communicate (although noble) is too ambitious. You can have entire films dedicated to going behind the scenes when it comes to war and what it actually means i.e. there are people making profits off of war selling weapons (finn/rose plot), what it means to be leading an army (holdo/leia) vs. trying to be a hero without holding the responsibility for other lives (poe). They're essentially very worthy ideas to explore, but it was too hastily done.... in favour of Rey/Ben

- I think Rian spent a lot of time trying to get Rey/Ben connection just right, and in doing so, might have been a bit sloppy with the other plot lines. And even so, I do agree with most people that the connection was rushed. At the same time, RJ did figured out what it means to have a telepathic bond with somebody unexpected and having no choice about it. It's almost like having an imaginary friend/ another conscience that you talk to, reveal everything to, and hoping they're listening and offering advice. It's literally facing your demons and confronting them, and in doing so, they gain new insight for themselves. To be fair, that is the only way reylo could have worked. Rey and Ben are both solitary people. They must have spent the majority of their days conversing with their own minds. Having that mental connection, without the physicality-aspect of the other being there, really eased both of their guards.

Another thought I had while watching the first time round was trying to imagine myself having a telepathic connection with someone else. At first thought, one's probably unsure how real they are. If the same person keeps popping up into your thoughts and seem as if they are there, it makes you question your own feelings regarding them. I bet both Rey and Ben had a moment to themselves trying to rationalise why they keep sensing the other. AND that's when the sexual tension is consciously realised. (i need a fic to fill in these blanks for me!!)

I also particularly liked how they each witnessed each other's futures as well as how Ben is probably the only person who knows the truth about Rey's parents and not Rey herself (ok maybe Unkar Plutt too). They are deeply intertwined, and I'm not having Snoke's bullsith of how he formed their connection. It almost seems like a part of Rey (that should belong to Rey) is within Ben, and vice versa.

And then there's the Throne Room fun. By this point, he's Ben to her. And he responds to that name. I absolutely adored how despite unclear motives, feelings were so clearly expressed. It's a matter of how to channel your conflicted feelings into actions. Ben is naturally letting his emotions out unreservedly. "Oh Snoke's making fun of me, he's torturing my girl, oh but wait Snoke's gone. I can have all of this power, even though I won't know what to do with it. But it's there for the taking, why not?" He doesn't second guess his feelings. They are his Driver (lol). I guess that's what they mean by the Dark Side. And then there's Rey, always thinking of the better good, second guessing, triple guessing her feelings. To say she was seduced by him is probably inaccurate. She was searching for the truth and the good, and acting out of these facts made out to her. You can tell once they won against the Praetorian guards, she immediately set her mind to the actions happening outside with the Resistance, whereas Ben was certainly more internally reflective. I'm definitely not saying Rey's outlook is better, which is why I'm also a keen sucker for the new grey order. Being too selfless was probably what drove the Jedi Order down in the first place. Eventually, with more clashes between these two on what drives the best decisions, hopefully will end with them being both externally and internally aware. (It's funny to see same struggles between Poe and Holdo, ie. do you act on your first passionate instincts or do you think of the greater good).

Okay, these are definitely my first, though not-so-coherent thoughts. Will come back with more once I see it a few more times.

Yes, and despite all his talk of no mercy and no quarter, he could have had the Falcon shot out of the sky, but he didn't. He allowed the last members of the Resistance to flee because Rey was with them. Renperor or not, Kylo isn't going to stay 'evil'- the film is chock full of hints that he won't.

The scene at the beginning when Kylo umasks was, at least to me, as powerful as his unmasking in TFA. In TFA the effect was to surprise the audience at how young and handsome he was. The second....he looked so ill it made me wince. Yet he was still good looking, strangely at the end when he fought Luke he'd never looked more beautiful, albeit tormented.

yes, I feel the same way... not only that, but she reached for his hand at first to trick him into believing she will accept his offer.
I was sighing when sie force-pulled the lightsaber instead, because I know in that moment Kylo would feel betrayed again.
I don't think she wanted to kill him- but she didn't save him either. She abandoned him on a badly damaged ship...just like on Starkiller.
She didn't actively killed him but she left him there unprotected. We see Hux almost shoot him before he woke up, or he could have stayed unconscious and died while the ship fall apart.

So in a way I get why Kylo is so angry.

now that I was thinking about it... it would have been a great opportunity for Rey to capture Kylo/Ben while he is still unconscious.
Grabbing the handcuffs she had on while going into the throne room and put him on the falcon with her. Dragging his stupid butt to his mother/resistance. Why oh why didn't they go for that??? It would have still created drama and conflict because oh would he be angry waking up!
But still... I can't help but playing head canon with that arc. Laughing

I dont know what to say guys... Such a rollercoaster ride... Things didnt quite go as we expected..
Don't get me wrong all the Reylo scenes were incredible and the chemistry between Adam & Daisy continues to
be sizzling. They work so well off each other. Too bad we didnt get a kiss but the hand scene was beautiful.. I love you I hope one day they get cast in another film as a couple. That would be so awesome.

Still,I am sad. Nit gonna lie. I did not want Renperor and see  Kylo turn even more darker in this film.  Plus watching his mom and Uncle completely lose hope in him was not reassuring either. Sigh.. Neutral
We needed to start seeing signs of his regret and traces of light in this film and we did not get it sadly.

At this point the only way to redeem him would be to sacrifice himself for Rey but the problem is whom would he save her from? There are no more baddies, he is the Renperor.

Right now he is the only one who could  kill her and viceversa. So most likely JJ will make Rey kill Kylo in another fight at the  end of IX. Therefore no Reylo... Sad
I dont know I am devastated. How can the only son of Han and Leia die with no hope? Its sad..
Plus Its going to hurt so much to watch Rey of all peoplekill him. Sigh..

I think I might have to leave this fandom for the next couple of years, it hurts so much.. I cant take it anymore.. Sad
Thanks for letting me vent guys! It was nice while it lasted.. Neutral  Crying or Very sad

Wow. Just wow. Watching the bootlegged Reylo scenes on an individual basis gave me a different idea than what I got watching the whole movie. Honestly. I'm not even sure if the protagonist is even supposed to be "dual" because the only person I was rooting for was Ben Solo. Everyone else can go take a flying leap. He was canonically abused by a creepy old child predator and every single person abandoned him - his uncle tried to murder him in his effing sleep! His whole family sucks, and even the woman he finally has this intimate connection with basically just uses him as eye candy and to experiment with the Force. By the time he became Renperor, I was pretty much hoping he'd blow everyone else to hell.

Just got back from seeing the movie. I'll probably write a more in depth review later, but I loved it. LOVED IT! I was completely unspoiled going in. I was so shocked and MY GOD, MY GOD...OMG it played out like a wild Reylo fanfic. Flying at me from every angle. My mouth was hanging open in shock and glee. Force bond moments with shirtless Kylo with Rey commenting on it! Kylo removing his glove to touch her hand. F****ing Renepror!  Also Kylo berating Hux at every turn. Rey and Kylo fighting the guards together. Basically every scene with Rey and Kylo played out like a fanfic to the point some of our writers need to freaking pat themselves on the back. And keep writing cause its obvious were LF is pulling their best ideas from. HOLY SH*T! What the F*#k did I just watch LOL Laughing

Forgot to add: I believe I also got a BINGO lol!

Laughing
@Night Huntress

Now that you've said it, I really wish they did that instead.

That scene almost felt like a typical waking up from a one night stand dilemma. perhaps Rey just went out to get coffee Embarassed

@tukicarreno

Okay.....I personally think Leia lost hope in Ben when he killed Han. As for Luke....as stated he himself created Kylo Ren. So their losing hope in him is a given. ' But.....don't give up on Ben Solo yet. Look at the evidence. First of all, just exactly what has Kylo done that's made him completely dark. Destroying the Resistance? This is the ugliness of war. All the Resistance members were soldiers, not civilians. Poe would have quite happily slaughtered everyone on the star destroyers, in fact he was quite willing to sacrifice his own people to do so, yet we're supposed to see him as a 'dashing hero'. Kylo is FO and the Resistance were his enemies. Secondly, he could have killed his mother. He didn't, did he? Thirdly....he didn't kill Luke, Luke sacrificed himself. And let's face it, who could blame him if he had? His own uncle tried to murder him in his sleep, and he was just a kid. And finally....regarding Rey....he practically offered himself to her, and not only did she reject him, she attacked him. A simple 'no' would have done!! Which brings me to the most iconic scene in TLJ....the breaking of the legacy sabre. In TFA it rather served as a metaphor for Thor's hammer - only the worthy can wield it. So after Kylo killed Han he lost the sabre to Rey. But in TLJ it shattered! Which means neither of them are fit to wield it. I see the sabre as a symbol of the balance; it can only be achieved when both Kylo and Rey are worthy of the sabre. At the end of TLJ I pitied Kylo so much.....he was clearly unwell, he has all the signs of a bad breakdown. And notice how relaxed and peaceful he is with Rey, and how tormented he is afterwards. Ruling the FO won't bring him peace, only being with Rey will do that. I think he's regretting his decision already. But remember, Kylo has been abused for years. He's terribly damaged and he can't change overnight. As for Rey.....I have a feeling she will also start to have regrets. Her journey is in no way over, and I always remember Daisy saying she doesn't think Rey will end up a Jedi, just as Adam said Kylo is alive but it 'depends upon what you call living.' Ben and Rey aren't over. They are just beginning.

Dang. I was almost completely spoiled going in and yet was still shocked by everything as it happened. Holy heck. Well, here is my reaction dump:

Everyone seemed more "real" to me in this movie than in tfa. Especially Hux(he was so great), Leia, Kylo, Snoke, and Poe (they all seemed even more human than in the previous movie to me). Everything felt more raw and natural and less formal and serious and less star warsy? Honestly, the irreverence that kinda pervaded the whole movie was really refreshing but also a bit upsetting or.....jarring? It was weird and I have mixed feelings. Anyway, Kylo's whole "let the past die" thing was kinda symbolic of how the movie was tearing apart the star wars conventions tbh, same with all the explosive imagery.

Really liked Paige, Rose, and Holdo. I felt really emotional about all of them, no matter how little time we got with them. Paige was a great actor for that scene wow. reading the Leia book probably added to my connection to Holdo, but her scene with Leia was really and sad and emotional for me. And Rose was just so fun and endearing and relatable and great.

I felt like Finn really needed more focus on him for some reason. Though I felt like john did really really well with what he had. He was full of energy and emotion and his humor was perfect as usual, but not as over-used as it was in tfa. I really felt his emotions in the scene when they were captured right before he fought Phasma. I liked how he transformed from only caring about rey and himself to caring about rose and the whole resistance, too. I think rey was proud of him at the end :)

My heart freaking broke when Luke said he wasn't gonna save Kylo and Leia said her son was gone. I was terrified Luke had resolved to kill Kylo but now I think he didn't mean that...he only meant that his last task before he died wouldn't be trying to save kylo...his "see you around, kid" gives me hope that he hasn't completely given up on kylo himself. I can't stand two more years waiting to find out if kylo can still be redeemed agh. And now I'm really sad we can't see carrie fisher again and can't see if she has truly given up on her son or not. And it really seems like IX was supposed to be her movie and she and rey were going to work together. :( did she leave the force-projected dice behind on purpose? ugh i hope. please.

okay so the reylo made me squirm cause i still can't believe normal people are actually watching a reylo force bond idk why this makes me uncomfortable and embarrassed but it did lol. it was cute though. but also kinda weird. but also funny. but also really cool. And I loved them fighting together it was awesome.

Kylo was really funny and adam did such a great job being totally unhinged as "renperor" and i see that since they killed snoke (which was probably the best move since he wasn't a very compelling villain? idk i'm not upset by it) kylo now has to be the main villain. it just really hurts and is gonna have me on edge for two years that is all. whatever. but he did an amazing job and the confrontation between luke and kylo was visually stunning.

And daisy was great, especially in the beginning, she portrayed her anxiety so well. I loved how the frog nuns got mad at her for messing things up all the time she was like a kid getting in trouble it was great. She and luke had great interactions, too, she was so natural with him. I felt like story-wise she trusted kylo a little more quickly than i expected. it was surprising how quickly she turned from calling him monster/snake/kylo to ben and thinking he has light in him. maybe i need to rewatch it. also I'm now not sure where she is now though since she shut the door on him?? has she given up or is she just mad idk agh and we are gonna have to wonder for two more years won't we ughhhh

Anyway Luke's arc was great, especially his talk with yoda and with kylo and the way he died. I feel uncomfortable that he was tempted to kill ben though....

Frog nuns and porgs and falthiers were all great.

Overall, the movie was good because it made me feel lots of emotions, but I'm honestly kinda mad at it xD though, there are so many favorite moments in it and overall i think i will end up liking it once i can get used to it. having so much new content all of the sudden after two years is kinda a shock. anyway sorry this post is messy and poorly worded. i'm still having trouble processing everything and it is late lol

edit-oh and I really loved how Luke said the same thing to both Rey and Kylo: "everything you just said was wrong" xD

@motherofpearl1

O-kay.
@Piper Maru

@DeeBee

I actually think it is to show Rey isn't all sweetness and light, she's still a grey character. And I am positive the Force bond still exists, that it had nothing to do with Snoke despite his bragging, and Rey will still have access to Kylo's mind.

Just calming down after first viewing...

I followed spoilers but STILL. We sat in the theater past the credits, stunned, and I had a good cry. I felt so horrible for Ben. It was the worst feeling. Leia says she’s given up on him, Luke says it’s all his fault, but then says he’s not here to save his soul, and Rey hops the ship to hopeful Resistance land. I don’t know what that look they shared was, but it seems that the bond is still open.  Very Happy

The first thing my husband said after was, “Sooo, is Kylo the main character now?” Laughing He was FREAKING amazing. Renperor and all! I can’t get enough of this guy, and he’s still terrible, but I sympathize! I love the glare he shot Snoke when he said the bond was his doing. I loved his yelling, and yet how calm he could be. Cold as hell, but also warm toward Rey at times. My husband even got that the hand touching scene was like a father of a teenage girl, catching her in her room with her punk boyfriend. I loved the showdown between Kylo and Luke. The Reylo fight gave me life and I cried when he killed Snoke (even though I knew things would turn to sh** after). I can’t even analyze the movie in a calm way yet, I can just explain how it made me feel.

What’s going to bring him back. Rey begging him obviously wasn’t enough. Is nine going to start with her coming up with a plan to turn him?

I can’t wait to see more Renperor and Hux! And there better be even more touching moments for Reylo. Hux is going to be pissed when he finds out Kylo’s smitten and killed Snoke for her.

Omg, did any read that awful collider article?  "Is it just the Force that connects Kylo and Rey or are they siblings?"???  Like, I can't.  Just how can you watch this and think they are siblings???
