@motherofpearl1
This might be a cheap shot at Jason Fry (and remember that I haven't read the novelization), but sometimes male authors have difficulty making female characters feel authentic. Add to it the problem that one of Rey's main character traits is that she herself doesn't totally understand the root of her own actions and thoughts yet, and you probably have a female character that sometimes feels disconnected on the page.
Someone who has read the book can tell me if that's accurate though.

I hope so, although TBH I loved Rey all the way - until her thoughts after a very pivotal scene.

I get what you mean- although I don't think that Rey is suffering from the typical "male-writer-syndrom"...
In my opinion the reason why Rey's feelings are made ambiguous or less "relatable" than Ben's is because they don't want to give away too much.
That's also why the last force bond is von Ben's pov instead of Rey's. Jason said many times on twitter that he had to be very careful not to step on any toes of episode IX.

Re: The Last Jedi General Discussion
Look at how these exact same camera angles were meant to contrast!
I never realized how removing the helmet was shown from the exact same angle in both movies. Whenever you do that it's to show a parallel, to show difference the second time.
Look at this wonderful contrast: in the first one he's confident and proud while in TLJ he's broken and beaten! One he's before Rey and the other he's before Snoke. Brilliance!

@Xylo Ren Do you have a direct link to the gifset? I'd like to reblog it.
The funny thing is that before I scrolled down, I couldn't figure out which column belonged to which movie. I thought the first one was TFA, and it turned out to be TLJ.

@Xylo Ren Awesome catch! That's the power of cinematography and editing right there.

@rawpowah @snufkin I thought the exact same thing! Just goes to show how similar these shots are when masked, only to highlight and contrast the difference once unmasked. Character development through pure visual storytelling. Even the way the lighting hits the silver chrome lines on his helmet is exactly the same, which means they were trying to achieve something very specific. The visual storytelling in this movie is one of the best in the saga IMO, power of cinematography indeed.

Re: The Last Jedi General Discussion
@Kylo Rey @Piper Maru has pointed out the contrast between his catwalk strut introduction in TFA as a cool bad a** villain versus TLJ when he confronts Luke and has his post-breakup tantrum.

ALSO I met Brian Herring (the guy who does the puppetry work for BB8 and the porgs) and he told me that between takes Adam Driver would run around on set to stay in character (?) so everyone on set started calling him “Kylo Run”
Cute! And this Tumblr commenter is right that it probably explains this too!

Re: The Last Jedi General Discussion
Reading all these things about the dedication of cast and crew once again makes me think TLJ was cheated at the Oscars. Ive seen award winning movies that were less well made and less deserving.

I loved the way he cranes his neck a bit right after braking the slide
Seriously, I can't look away from that 2nd to last .gif! Is it too wierd if I can't help but notice how beautifully shaped his lips (and the filtrum) are... aside from the overall asymmetry of his face yielding to such startlingly striking looks (that article about symmetrical looks leading to traditionally accepted beauty comes to mind), his lips, nose, and his eyes are IMO his best features. I've so far seen about 2/3 of his movies (have yet to see Logan's Lucky and a few others), but I think Rian's and JJ's "cameras" pretty much make love to AD's face (and the rest too haha).

Great video showing all the parallels TLJ had with other SW movies/shows.

Nice! It’s cool to see some of the throne room similarities back to back, and I appreciated the Rebels stuff since I haven’t watched much. I wish they’d included more TFA+TLJ parallels, especially lines spoken by Kylo and Rey, but you can tell the creator’s not a Reylo since they paralleled the “I love you/I know,” and “I’m Poe/Rey/I know.” That feels like such a reach. The only similarity is “I know.”
