The photo description describes it as a "head cast". Does anyone involved in film production know what that means?

As the head cast in the photo clearly has Rey's three-bunned wig on it, I'm just gonna guess that it is a plain old wig block, cast from her head so they could make her wig. Here's a description of how that's done for Phantom of the Opera, though the description is how to make a head cast on the cheap, and I'm sure that SW uses some kind of much more high quality system than saran wrap and masking tape:

I guess it could also be for something else, with a depiction of her face, but it's turned away from the camera so it's hard to tell. Seeing as the Royals were looking at old stuff mostly (including Rey's costume), I'm going to guess they were looking at something that couldn't possibly give anything away.

IE, it's never going to appear on film. It is a cast of Daisy's head made so they could create her wig and store it without it being deformed.

Just IMHO.

If the 3-bun hairdo was a wig (I'd just assumed that it was her natural hair with some extensions woven in), that could explain why it seems like Daisy's hair color has seemed darker in recent photos than it was in TFA--she's not wearing her "Rey wig".

I can't tell if it was a wig in the original, but even if it was her own hair, there would be valid reasons to have a three-bun wig now:

1. Daisy may need her hair longer or darker now, but there may be flashbacks to the TFA style and it is simpler to use a wig for those bits.
2. It may be called Daisy's wig despite actually being her stunt-double's wig.

It was a safety thing, no doubt. Adam Driver tripped up on his tunic a lot and there were explosions going off on that battlefield. It was probably Daisy for the close up stuff, but most of it was shot from a distance as I recall.
