Agreed. It's a classic approach in storytelling. Kylo reached his absolute lowest point in TFA. Now is the time to reflect on what happened and pick up the pieces. I don't know what people who claim he is going to sink further into darkness are expecting from the rest of this trilogy, but it doesn't make any sense based on this setup. Same for Rey defeating him in the first movie and calling him a monster. Rey and Kylo are explicitly presented as two sides of the same coin. The fact they're bringing up her opinion of him is already telling in itself. It means the way she sees him will matter to their stories, one way or another. At this point there is hardly anything that could make her think less of him. So, where does it go from here? The emphasis is that right now she doesn't understand him. The only logical conclusion is that she will by the end as they get to know each other. There would literally be no story if their relationship never evolves beyond that of mortal enemies throughout.

Right? I know that we've all been speculating about that sort of thing here for the past two years, but it seemed like a sort of random thing to call out in that particular article.

The emphasis on adolescent rebellion is still super odd to me right now. I feel as if they're still acting like Ben Solo turned at 15 as was originally speculated (and what I still think was the original story). Turning at 23 is beyond adolescent rebellion. I suppose this could mean that the tendrils of that rebellion reach back to when Kylo was a kid, but still. It's odd to pinpoint that as the heart of his issues and choices all things considered.

TBH, I saw it more as AB's attempt to shoehorn a reference to Kylo's Silencer in. Then again, he could have done that without referring to Rey and Kylo having a shared interest. Is expert piloting a shared interest anyway? More a shared skill.

What I also find interesting is that Kylo's relationships to other characters are not described - not to Leia, not to Luke, just Rey. The last thing I expected was to hear anything about the relationship between Rey and Kylo. They went there! (A little.)

So that tells me that Kylo's relationship with Rey may be the most crucial one for him in the movie, since that's what they chose to highlight.

Perhaps it ties in more with whatever Ben did that actually got him sent to Luke?

My younger brother had his adolescent rebellion in his early 20s; nothing as extreme as Kylo but he really was a difficult sith who caused mum much worry. I think that "adolescent rebellion" period can extend well beyond teens. Plus isn't it pretty much a stereotype that boys mature later?

Hello Nerd Off, round two! I don't really think you can really compare Star Wars with Jane Austen, but those two sure could be Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe.

@ZioRen - I think Kylo is emotionally stunted - he's still in that rebellious phase because of Snoke's abuse and his parents' abandonment. Thematically, it makes sense to me too - it's a coming of age story, so he fits that trope as long as he's still "young."

Add "adolescent rebellion" to Rey having a "coming of age storyline." What happens during adolescence and when someone comes of age? Well, you have a personal reckoning, angst, life choices, and a first kiss/romance. My money's on that it's not Luke she has it with on Ahch-To. It's going to be angsty as hell, but Reylo is going to happen.

Rey is gonna disrupt the wildest nudist beach on Ahch-To.

That thing is way too relaxed looking to be a uterus. But maybe this is why they made JD Rizler take down his blog about the glory days of Lucasfilm, because one entry went into detail about the amount of weed and LSD that got consumed by staff during the making of the OT. Just out of curiosity, because of Frank Oz's rumored return involvement and the previous history between Lucasfilm and Jim Henson, wonder if the Henson creature shop had any involvement in the production. The only reason I ever gave a s**t as a kid about the Dagobah part of ESB was because I was huge fan of Jim Henson's creatures and demented sensibilities/sense of humor.

Just got back from dinner and I'm catching up.  Shared interests, two halves of a whole, hints that Kylo is chalk full of regret, Rey's feelings towards Kylo being personal, good lord the only thing that's missing a leak where she touches his scar.  

And here I was battening down the hatches, bracing myself for an onslaught of EVIL!Kylo..

I was hoping not to hate the article. I was not expecting to love it!!!

I'm laughing because I read a Reddit 'EW revised' TLJ 'synopsis' that had the Kylo/Rey yin yang being the 'eventual love and acceptance by cousins'. I don't know what I was expecting, but I did start laughing really loud.

I give them too much credit at times.
