We have to ask about Star Wars. What's the latest on Episode VIII? Have you watched an early cut yet or is it too soon?

I watched a sizzle reel. I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very...[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It's very, very exciting. Rian doesn't love showing stuff. I've seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it's fully done. I don't think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team....

Have you heard anything about a trailer yet?

No. I could probably ask, but Rogue One is out in like a week, so I guess we'll let that come out, be amazing, let people respond to that first. One step at a time! I know there's Celebration next year. Hopefully something will be shown there? That's speculation, by the way...

What are the Living Force and Unifying Force?

The Living Force and Unifying Force are two different roles or aspects of the Force. The Living Force is the more concrete of the two - it is the Force as simply life and emotion. As a philosophy, Jedi who follow the Living Force tend to be more concerned with the concrete and the physical. They believe in treating the situation that is right in front of them. As part of the Light Side, the Living Force is the Force as love, joy, and compassion. As part of the Dark Side, the Living Force is the Force as fear, anger, and hatred.

Case Study: Why did Anakin Skywalker fall to the Dark Side?

In the spirit of the Living Force, I'm going to lead off with a concrete example. Understanding the story of Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One, is critical to understanding the nature of the Force. The question of why Anakin fell to the Dark Side isn't as obvious as clear-cut as you might think.

A superficial reading of the prequel trilogy suggests an obvious explanation: the Orthodox Jedi philosophy - that is, the dominant philosophy of the Jedi Order in the Prequel Era - holds that Jedi need to celibate. Otherwise, they might form attachments, get emotional, and fall to the Dark Side. Anakin breaks the celibacy policy, forms an attachment, gets emotional, and falls to the Dark Side. One could be forgiven for concluding that the Orthodox Jedi philosophy has been vindicated.

But this superficial reading misses one tiny, itsy-bitsy, but unspeakably crucial detail: that's not the end of Anakin's story.

Anakin's story doesn't end on Coruscant with his fall to the Dark Side. It ends above Endor, with his return to the Light. And what brought him back to the Light?

His love for his son.

Attachment, it seems, hasn't just damned Anakin Skywalker. It's also saved him. As long as we look at the story through the eyes of the Orthodox Jedi, the climax of the Star Wars saga will forever remain a baffling and inexplicable paradox.

All of which leads me to believe that Anakin did not fall to the Dark Side because of his attachments. It was the exact opposite: Anakin Skywalker fell to the Dark Side because of his detachment. Anakin did not fail the Jedi Code, the Jedi Code failed him.

By the time of the Clone Wars, the Force had fallen out of balance. The Jedi had placed the Unifying Force above the Living Force. They had abandoned love as a form of the Light - they might have respected it in principle, but they still forbid all expression of it in practice. And by abandoning the Living Force, the Jedi had blinded themselves to the reality of the situation. They couldn't see the Dark Side lurking in the shadows.

The Chosen One is supposed to be the Jedi messiah, the hero who will bring balance to the Force and destroy the Sith once and for all. As the living embodiment of the Light Side of the Force, Anakin feels love more strongly than anyone who has ever lived. I can't help but wonder if this was supposed to be a sort of test - the Force throwing up its metaphorical hands and saying, "Look, Jedi, if you can't manage to keep this guy from falling to the Dark Side, then there's nothing I can do to save you."

Padme was never in any danger until Anakin's own actions broke her spirit. Anakin's anxieties were about something abstract and detached, rather than a real and concrete danger. He was so concerned about preventing the prophecy in his visions that, ultimately, he forgot what it was that had made him care about preventing them in the first place.

The ideas laid out here are one of the things that partially redeem the prequels for me. Looking at the narrative at a more abstract level, it does work as a story about the Jedi and the Force.

   By the time of the Original Trilogy, Obi-Wan and Yoda have been humbled, but they still show signs of the old Jedi Orthodoxy. Yoda tells Luke that he must defeat Vader. Obi-Wan tells him to bury his feelings deep down.

This last is an interesting point, because Luke's attachment to Leia is a problem. Because Luke can't hide his feelings, Vader learns Leia's significance, and then he exploits Luke's attachment to almost turn him. The OT leave this problem unresolved, and one of my hopes for the new films is that they tackle it.

One other thing is that I feel that by RotS Anakin's love for Padmé is turning in on itself. He's not being fully open with her, he's paying less attention to what she wants and more to what he wants for her, and ultimately the path he pursues is the opposite of hers. In the end, Anakin's love seems self-centred - which perhaps is one reason why it can appear so juvenile. Of course, all these things are encouraged by Anakin's situation - separation from Padmé, lack of opportunity to talk about and develop a loving relationship, etc..

You're int he right place and I love theorising as well....infact, I do think Unkar will follow the tracker on the MF to Ach-to with bounty hunters to capture Rey...I don't think the guy who Kylo stabs is Zuvio though....Zuvio is a cop on Jakku and is a very ethical guy, as per a canon short story that was released last year...I doubt he would join Unkar in any of his shady dealings....but there have been other bounty hunters who wore this type of bowl hat so it could be one of them.

I also have a theory that Unkar gave information on the tracker he put on the MF to Hux for reward money...and that is why Hux tells Snoke that they tracked the rebels to the Ileenium system in TFA....they were basically tracking the movements of the MF...and will probably continue to do so into episode 8.

I like theorizing, too.  I think it would be interesting if Luke were the one who brought Kylo's shuttle down, especially if the rumors about Luke wanting Rey to kill Kylo are true.

I think it's very possible that Unkar put a tracker on the Millennium Falcon.  That's probably how he was able to follow Rey to Takodana in the deleted scene.  I think it’s also possible that Kylo had a tracker put on the ship when he boarded it on Starkiller Base in that other deleted scene.  Maybe that’s how he’ll find Rey and Luke on Ahch-To.

At this point I'm not sure what to think about anything in Rey's Force vision.  It was just so confusing.  I'm not even sure whether Kylo stabbing Salad Bowl or whoever it was is supposed to be the past or the future.  I used to kind of assume it was the future, but now I don't know.  They really created a huge Mystery Box when they made TFA.  And on the one hand, it's kind of cool because it is a lot of fun to speculate and theorize, but on the other it can be very frustrating because there are so many theories that seem valid and could very well end up being correct in the end.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the problem is that we still have to wait over a year to find out the answers.  And even then some of the mysteries might not be solved, or at least completely solved, until Episode IX.

See I have issue with the Luke wanting Rey to kill Kylo rumour (and I'm sure I'm not alone) in that why would he ever want to hurt his sister like that?  It would show that Luke really doesn't care for Leia at all if he wants her only child dead.  I can only see that idea working if Luke's go a little dark - because wouldn't it have to come from a place of revenge and revenge isn't good or light.

I agree TFA is a big ol' mystery box that made so many questions and answered so few.  

It would be amusing in a sense if there are trackers from Plutt and the FO on the Falcon - it wouldn't make the Resistance look very good at checking!!! But when Han and Chewie found the Falcon didn't they find it via a tracker or something - I can't quite remember.
